Update: This issue has since been resolved with Cubit Estimating version 14.0.4.
Summary
Some Bitdefender installations create a small virtual disk on Windows devices. This virtual disk can interfere with Cubit Estimating licence activation by preventing the system from detecting a valid hardware ID.
What’s Happening
Certain versions of Bitdefender install a small virtual disk (approximately 32 MB) that appears in Windows Disk Management.
Examples may include files such as:
BdDci4_Virtual_Disk_Classic.vhd
This virtual disk does not expose a standard hardware identifier. When Cubit Estimating attempts to read hardware IDs during licence activation, the presence of this disk can cause the activation process to fail.
This behaviour originates from Bitdefender and is not a defect in Cubit licensing.
Impact
When this issue occurs, Cubit Estimating may fail to activate successfully. Customers may see errors such as:
Failed to detect hardware ID
Activation cannot continue
This typically affects systems where:
Bitdefender has created the virtual disk, and
The licensing service scans all connected storage devices.
Confirmed Indicators
You may be experiencing this issue if all of the following apply:
A small “Bitdefender Virtual Disk (32 MB)” appears in Windows Disk Management
Cubit Estimating fails during licence activation
The issue persists even after reinstalling Bitdefender
Cause
This virtual disk appears to be part of Bitdefender’s internal protection or threat-detection mechanisms.
Community reports suggest it may be triggered by interactions with virtualisation tools such as VirtualBox or VMware.
At this time, Bitdefender has not published an official knowledge base article or configuration option to disable this virtual disk.
Workarounds and Mitigations
Until Bitdefender provides an official fix, the following workarounds may help:
Consult Your IT Department for a Clean Bitdefender Reinstallation
If Bitdefender is managed by your organisation, we recommend consulting your internal IT department or managed service provider before making changes.
Your IT team may be able to:
Fully uninstall Bitdefender using the official Bitdefender removal tool
Restart the affected computer
Reinstall Bitdefender in line with your organisation’s security policies
In some environments, a controlled reinstall performed by IT can prevent the Bitdefender virtual disk from being recreated.
Next Steps
Buildsoft is currently:
Confirming with Bitdefender whether this virtual disk behaviour is intended or a defect
Testing additional scenarios where Cubit Estimating can safely ignore the Bitdefender virtual disk when selecting hardware IDs
Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
